The Antelope House Overlook at Canyon de Chelly presented us with the first view of the “big rock” that we expected to see. The sheer vertical walls, the rugged and painted rock, and the narrow gaps between faces was, in my view, more impressive than the ruins seen at a distance. We arrived at a time when the light was seemingly lighting up alternating formations of rock, and given the narrowness of the canyon at this location, the rock that was lit was standing out quite prominently.
The overlook here juts out a bit and allows you to walk along the rim and see several different views of Black Rock Canyon below. If you are up to climbing down the embankment from the parking lot, it’s possible to get closer to the rim and position a camera to get a full frame of opposite vertical wall.
