We made the trek from Atlanta to Kentucky’s Land Between the Lakes (LBL) for the Spring Hick Hop weekend (more info here). It was an opportunity to visit a new recreational area, spend some time camping with friends, and checking out the new trailer. The weekend was all of that, and a whole lot of rain as well. Despite the biblical rains, fast-moving thunderstorms, and whipping winds, the weekend was still a success.
We stayed at the Energy Lake Campground with a good campsite overlooking the lake, with access to power and with nearby showers and restrooms.
The trailer, despite pending modifications to enhance our camping experiences, served in a great support role to haul tents, coolers, firewood, chairs, kitchen supplies, and food. Supplies that would otherwise have ended up in the Grand Cherokee were easily packed in the trailer, which freed up space for two adults, a child safety seat, and the Jeep’s full-size spare. It towed like a dream both on the way up, heavily loaded, and on the return trip, when it weighed somewhat less.
Activities included some trail riding, which was made somewhat more challenging by the rains, some wildlife viewing at the wildlife refuge, and some quiet times between passing squalls. LBL offers a lot of recreational opportunities, and at 170,000 acres, will require a number of trips to explore.
