Massacre Cave Overlook

IMG_0485aLt Antonio Narbona, leading a Spanish military expedition, fought a winter’s day battle against a group of Navajo in 1805. The Navajo people fortified themselves in a cave in Canyon del Muerto, a canyon within what is now the Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Narbona claimed that by the end of the day they had killed 115 Navajo, and the place has since come to be called Massacre Cave.

Massacre Cave Overlook is located on the north rim, and offers a path to a view of the cave area and the valley floor below. While the view and the terrain aren’t as spectacular as some of the other locations, the site does offer another perspective of the canyon and is along the same access road to reach Mummy Cave Overlook.
